About the Provincial Strategy.
The Ministry of Health has funded a provincial pilot that will help improve the quality of life for patients who require ventilation and effectively reduce pressure on intensive care units. Many patients, including those who have been diagnosed with other complex medical conditions requiring a ventilator, or those at risk, will now be able to receive the specialized care they need in an environment outside of the ICU and closer to home.
This Pilot will:
Four hospitals have been designated as administrative leads and will support specialized providers that exist within their geographies to form three hub and spoke structures.
There will be three designated Administrative Hubs:
This Pilot will:
- Help keep ICU beds available for those who need them the most.
- Improve the quality of life for people requiring long-term ventilation by allowing these individuals to receive specialized care closer to home.
- Reduce unnecessary emergency department visits.
- Coordinate long-term vent expertise from across the province and make it available for all Ontarians' closer to where they live.
- Coordinate existing resources from across the province to support better patient care.
